FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why do we need a new playground?

The average lifespan for a playground in Calgary is 15 years.  The current playground at Escuela Collingwood School was built in 2000 and accordingly is nearing the end of its life expectancy. While it is being safely maintained by the CBE, the playground is scheduled to be dismantled at the end of 2014.  The CBE is strongly encouraging us to raise the necessary funds and replace the playground ASAP - before it becomes unsafe and needs to be torn down without a replacement.

Why is a playground important?

A playground is not just about allowing children to let off steam - its a fundamental building block in a child's education.  An extension of the classroom, a playground fosters a sense of connection between children, their peers, and their school community.  It allows for opportunities for a child to be physically active, to broaden thier social skills, and develop friendships and memories.

How much will the Playground Cost?

We have anticipated the new playground will have a cost of approximately $298,000, based on a pea gravel surface being used.  The budget has increased from that previously reported due to recent changes in CSA and CBE safety standards.

How will you raise so much?

It is a lot of money but our team of volunteers is hard at work at various grant applications and sponsorship requests.  We're also relying on the support of community members like you.  Unfortunately, the cost of the playground is not covered by the Calgary Board of Education or Collingwood School Budget.

What kind of surfacing will the new playground have?

The Calgary Board of Education allows either pour-in-place rubberized surfacing or gyro (pea gravel), as these materials are safe for children and long-lasting in Calgary's climate.  The choice between these two alternatives will depend on the funds raised. â€‹ At present, it appears that funding will dictate the use of pea gravel.

What are the key goals of the new playground?

In working towards a new playground, we have established the following key goals:

1. To create a playground that will be both engaging and interesting for K-6 students and children in the community.

2. To ensure there is accessible equipment for 5-12 year olds, regardless of ability, while complying with CBE standards.

3. To create an environment, which brings the community together and enhances the education of those students attending Collingwood School.

4. To promote active play by establishing a safe, secure and fun playground, where children can create lasting memories.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Thanks to our partnership with Parks Foundation Calgary, a tax receipt will be issued for all cash donations of $25 or more.  Depending on your personal circumstances, this may entitle you to the federal charitable  donations tax credit and the Alberta charitable tax credit.  In addition, where you are a first time donor to a charity, you may also be entitled to the federal first-time donor's super credit.

Can I make an in-kind donation of services or materials?

Yes, all donations are appreciated! Please contact the Collingwood School Playground Team to discuss. We are currently seeking in-kind donations for grass seed and sod and trucks to haul excavated dirt, as well as augering, surfacing, landscaping and garbage removal.  Please let us know if you can assist!
